New Zealand earthquake: 165 now confirmed dead-June 2011 New large aftershock

New Zealand earthquake: 65 dead in Christchurch

New Zealand's prime minister says at least 65 people have died after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch.

John Key said the toll was expected to rise further, adding: "We may be witnessing New Zealand's darkest day."

The tremor caused widespread damage as it occurred at lunchtime when Christchurch was at its busiest, at a shallow depth of 5km (3.1 miles).

The mayor of New Zealand's second-biggest city says at least 200 people are believed trapped under rubble.

The country's deadliest natural disaster in 80 years struck at 1251 (2351 GMT on Monday), 10km (6.2 miles) south-east of the city.

I am not sure where MikeNZ and Nam Phyyng live- maybe in Aukland? I hope they're safe.

But I know that Navatar , a regular TCB chatter, resides in Christchurch. In fact we were just chatting about 2-3 days ago, and I welcomed him with my standard greeting, " Hi, what rocks your world now?" ( Peiyan joined us later.) This has been our private joke after the first strong tremor in September last year when he talked with us for long hours about his scary experiences, to relieve himself of the shock. Since then, he wouldn't run of frightful stories whenever he chatted. His house was partly damaged, but he did not move out. So that's kind of worrying now. I really hope he is safe and sound.

Yes, it was a nice, good chat with both of you that day. Marie, it is indeed worrying if he has not logged on here since then, especially when he is living in the affected zone. Hope that the other NZ forumers are ok too. Lets all hope for the best for all of them.

Marie, allow me to ask a question here. Since I had never gone to the TCB Chatter before. How do I go to TCB chatter? When I click on the hyperlink, it does came out like a chat box and within a few seconds, it redirect you saying 'Thank you for chatting in the Thai Chat Box'. May I know what went wrong?

Re: New Zealand earthquake: 75 dead in Christchurch

The next couple of days is going to be crucial to find survivors under the rubble because any more than 5 days with out water and you will probably be dead. Some times people can live for weeks under rubble if rain fall seeps in and they can access water, there is also the problem of exposure to the cold at night as people were wearing minimal clothing for day time use.
Hopefully they find more survivors soon.
