Fav Singapore Movie?
Hi all,
I was reading the Thai Fav Movie thread, and with some interest and curiosity hoped to find out how's the impact of Singapore movie on the rest of the world (i.e. the forumers here), especially as some of our local films had won several prestigious international movie awards over the years.
To start off, I will list mine first, and also enclose the relevant film sypnosis for each below for interested parties (yes, I'm all for nurturing local arts talents!):

- 4:30
http://www.zhaowei.com/430/synopsis.html
Some other much-lauded movies which I hope to have a chance to watch are 12 Lotus and 15 (http://sg.movies.yahoo.com/12+Lotus/movie/14774/ and http://www.directorsnotes.com/2006/0...5-royston-tan/, both by Royston Tan (, and Eric Khoo's My Magic (http://www.zhaowei.com/mymagic/mymagic_synopsis.htm#).
Sorry, these are all portrayals of the less-spoken, less sanitised side of squeaky clean Singapore, but non the less realistic.
So, what's your fav Singapore movies?

Re: Fav Singapore Movie?
Hmm..after I had read about 4:30, something just came across my mind. Where did the flimmaker gather all these inspirations from? Is it through some imaginations or is it based on a true story? I believe the hardest part in making of movie how to communicate and send the message across while min words being used and instead through by body language like their eyes and facial expressions, or subtle cues of their hands...
This 4:30 film does arouse me and I wonder how to purchase it. Does anyone got any idea?Franklin D. Roosevelt - The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.

U can try asking at local movie stores - they may carry carry it although so far, the ones I have seen are only 881, 12 Lotus and mostly Eric Khoo's and Jack Neo's. Or you can try email Zhao Wei Films directly.

Re: Fav Singapore Movie?
By going through the Zhao Wei Films webbie, I discovered a horror film detailing our local mythology of hantus hantus (Malay word for ghosts)http://www.zhaowei.com/7thmonth.html. Another local movie for me to seek

Re: Fav Singapore Movie?
Well, I'm still okie with this and thus by allowing these films to be made. It does certainly raise a certain levels of awareness among people who may tends to ignore or even failed to notice upon. That is what I think..

Even when I clicked on the link on 15, its almost as if I'm caught by suprised. Its because I didn't know the existence of this film. Maybe I'm a frog in the well haha. But I do have a memory of My Magic directed by Eric Khoo mentioned in the news and about the actor as a magician.Franklin D. Re: Fav Singapore Movie?
15 was first aired about 12 years ago amidst lots of controversy. It was Royston Tan's debut and received lots of rave reviews for his honest, no-hold barred portrayal of a group of delinquent youths in SG, using real delinquent youths from real life. It was actually subjected to numerous censors, probably due to its gaphic drug taking and/or gang fights scenes and even then, it was released with a M18 or R(A) rating. It was even reported that at least one of the youths went back to old ways after the movie.
I have not watched it yet as it is quite difficult to procure it locally but one of my then Beng friends who had the opportunity to do so in Johor was insistent that the movie was intensely raw in its lucidity which did not attempt at all to glamorize or excuse delinquency (which was what many mainstream 'gangster' movies often tried to do). And definitely many of then my teenaged friends and I were really excited about the release of the movie as we felt that FINALLY there was that one local movie that goes without any pretense to tell the world about that side of SG that was often hushed up to tourists. We were just so bored and tired of pretending to the outside world that that part of our country which really exists is only that part which is 'for show only'.Last edited by yy; 19-03-11 at 05:17 PM. So what are some of everyone's fav Singapore movies? Hopefully, our local movies are not so obscure that they are rarely known or watched by the rest of the world!

Yes, even I'm not a beng myself which also find that this is one of the local movie that goes without any pretense to tell the world about this side of Singapore..I've also admired Royston Tan about the honest film which he had produced. He even made it so realistic that by using real delinquent youths in SG and real life...I've to admire him for this
. Peiyan, I'm suprised that you haven't watched the film 12 yet while your friend mentioned the storyline to you...Normally a friend mentioning a movie and somehow rather it will interest the person whom have not watch to watch it.
By an classic chinese saying that goes "Human in the initial stage or forms and their souls are pure and untainted". I believe everyone by nature possess a kind and compassionate heart. It's just that its the journey in their lives have somehow changed. No matter what had happened in the past, as long as one person is to willing "to abandon the murderous sword, to sit down and become a Buddha". It's never too late to repent.Franklin D.
