Maybe you can be the first and post your account here... Sounds like a really far drive...
Sleep, little one, close your eyes, mother will sing you a lullaby... Sleep in a jewel cradle, sleep, mother will rock you.
If you don't sleep the midges will go for your eyes and pollen will fall on the cradle....Sleep, close your eyes...

Khon Kaen to Vientiane is quite easy to drive.
    Vientiane onwards its quite hilly.

I think the gt riders forum's Laos section would have some useful info from the motorcyclists' point of view - sights, recommended hotels and restaurants, loads of pics. they also publish a roadmap. I haven't been inside this section but usually there are detailed descriptions of road conditions and fairly up-to-date information.

As I know, foreigners are not allowed to drive a vehicle in China. If you are coming with your own car, you've to hire an chinese driver, I read in many articles.

I believe foreigners are allowed to drive in China but they must hold a Chinese driving license.

That is right, and the get a special number plate. What I wanted to say is, that it's not in that way like it is in Thailand or Laos, that you cross the border with your international driving licence in your pocket, and everything is ok.
