Michelle Yeoh blacklisted in Burma after Suu Kyi film

The actress who plays the part of Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a forthcoming film has been barred from entering Burma.

Michelle Yeoh, a former Bond girl, tried to enter the country on 22 June but was deported on the same day.

An official told reporters that Michelle Yeoh was now blacklisted and would not be able to enter Burma.

She has visited Burma before - in December, she met the Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.

"She did not have the chance to enter Myanmar (Burma) again. She was deported straight away on the first flight after arriving at Yangon (Rangoon) International Airport," a Burmese official said.

Ms Yeoh has previously travelled to Burma with Aung San Suu Kyi's son, Kim Aris, who was allowed into the country earlier this month to mark his mother's 66th birthday.

YANGON - Myanmar has deported Hollywood actress Michelle Yeoh (picture), who stars as pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a movie.

The Malaysian actress arrived in Yangon, on Wednesday and was deported the same day because she was on a blacklist, a government official said.

"She did not have the chance to enter (Myanmar) again," said another official. "She was deported straight away on the first flight after arriving at the international airport."

No details were given for her ejection. It is not clear why Ms Yeoh was attempting to get back into the country.

In preparation for her role in The Lady, Ms Yeoh spent time with Ms Suu Kyi after the Nobel peace laureate was released from house arrest last December.

The Luc Besson movie about Ms Suu Kyi's life is due to be released later this year and Ms Yeoh said she hopes her portrayal of Ms Suu Kyi will raise awareness about the Nobel Peace Prize winner's story.

Ms Suu Kyi, 66, spent most of the last two decades in detention. She was released last year after an election that her party boycotted and in which she was barred participating in as a candidate.

Speaking about her role, the former Miss Malaysia said the movie was an "incredible love story that has political turmoil within" - referring to the opposition leader's marriage to British academic Michael Aris, who died while she was in detention.

Ms Yeoh, who starred in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha and lent her voice to the animation Kung Fu Panda, travelled to Myanmar in December with the couple's son, Kim Aris. He was allowed to return to country earlier this month to celebrate his mother's 66th birthday. Agencies
