    Thai TV with English Subtitles

    Sawadee kab

I am looking for some help if possible. I have a wonderful Thai girlfriend and she works so hard. So when she sits down to relax and watch TV I want her to enjoy it. As my Thai is not that good just now, I was wondering if there was a way of watching Thai TV with her but with english subtitles. When we watch the news for instance, she explains what is happening to me but a lot of the time to do this, she has to pause it and tell me. I want to share in her life and I will learn Thai but just to make her relaxed time, relaxed, I just wondered if I can watch TV with her, without having to bother her with translations.

Also if anyone has any suggestions of the best way to learn Thai, they would be very gratefully appreciated as well.

Hi David, sorry mate there is no easy way to learn thai, but you've got the best thing a live in teacher, i suggest you start learning the thai alphabet like you would if you were learning english, learning this and to recognize the letters is a far better base than trying to remember long sentences.then after this base learning becomes so much easier and your level becomes so much better than most people who try learning thai.
Day to day stuff like learning the days of the week, time, colours, basic sentences like what's your name, where you come from, how old are you.
For what your asking stuff like the news, its just to hard, your better off with Thai movies that have English sub titles, i have many horror and martial art movies, good luck and hope some of this helps. cheers

Good morning here. Lets say you don't have an FTA satellite dish or sometimes referred to as BUD big ugly dish, but you have a good high speed internet connection. I recommend Captiveworks Vue Box or AZ Box these are set top boxes loaded with software when hooked to your TV inputs you can stream live TV anywhere in the world. Many other limitless features web browser,P2P,podcast etc... They come with most of the software loaded that you will need. You can use a keyboard and mouse with them it makes it easier. They are Linux media systems which basically turn your TV into a full functioning computer and much more without accessing your PC OR laptop. I hope this can be of some help to you I know it is a lot to absorb feel free to pick my brain anytime always here to help. Enjoy the day!

Hi surgeon, fantastic tec info, but the biggest problem in watching anything thai is they dont automatically translate into english!!! so even with movies you need to normally download separate subtitles, so thai news or soap operas, or anything live you have absolute no chance in getting subtitles and no chance live subtitles, English is not the 2nd language in Thailand its not like the Philippines or Singapore so basically when watching thai tv the best thing is to turn off and put a dvd on!!!! joking but fairly true.

The Hotbird Satellite at 13.0 East has DMC TV & TGN. TGN(Thai Global Network) has sometimes programs in Thai but with English subs.
I send like year ago a email to TGN, with question if they can added more English subtitles to Thai programs. But (of course) i never get a reply.
Unfortunately TGN on Hotbird is most of the time(European timeevening) cooking programs. My Thai girlfriend prefer film1(movie channels) instead of TGN, and she don't like DMC TV.

TGN location on Hotbird6 13.0E is at:
    Transponder- 10815.00H
    Modulation- QPSK
    Symbol rate- 27500 5/6
    SID- 17320
    VPID- 2020
    AUDIO- 3020 tha
    PMT- 1020
    PCR- 2020

TGN location on Intelsat805 55.5W is at:
    Transponder- 3772.00V
    Modulation- QPSK
    Symbol rate- 13333 5/6
    SID- 1
    VPID- 2001
    AUDIO- 3001 tha
    PMT- 1001
    PCR- 2001

Both are FTA (Free To Air) so can be view with any DVB-S(2) receiver, no smartcardreader nessesary. (so yes a cheap ass QPSK sat set will work)
