Archive Footage Of Floods In Bangkok In 1942.

This is a film from you tube showing the massive floods in Bangkok during the year 1942...( Many thanks to the uploader ).It looks like this was the time when the boats congested the roads in Bangkok and not the traffic!I am fascinated with things and occasions from times gone bye both in my own country and others.I did manage to pick up on a few Thai names and places mentioned in the film, but i was wondering if this year in 1942 was Bangkoks worst ever year for flooding?I thought it was great that this history was captured all those 69 years ago.

Would this be another old film from Bangkok taken years ago? I copied the title and put it through my translater and it came back with this: 100 years before our ?...another one i tried did say Bangkok.Well if it is i liked the footage showing the trams and the streets void of nearly all but a few motor cars, those shown seem to have somewhat precariously spred out wobbly wheels. It seemed that during this age it was the Trams and the Rickshaws that ruled the roads. Most of the buildings in the film seem to be no more than three storys high...how times have changed....well that is, if this is Bangkok?

When I went to Bangkok in the early 1970's the tallest building was the Dusit Thani Hotel. I was told that it was impossible to build a taller building as Bangkok was sinking. Times and technology changed and as you can see now there are many tall buildings there. One thing that hasn't changed, however, is that Bangkok is still sinking!

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately I can't see it because of my #@&* slow internet connection, so I'll just be content trying to remember if I had ever been told anything about the flood.

    thanks for posting, very interesting.
the atmosphere still seems to be the same around here whenever a heavy downpour floods the streets or the river breaks its banks, many people in some neighbourhoods go on as usual.
I guess those higher buildings are sinking all the same but nobody really gives a hoot about them, they just hope nothing serious will happen anytime soon.

It was interesting seeing the second video, Still the rich had it good back then, at least they had cars, something many Thia's don't have today.

This film shows some of the old steam trains that worked on the Bangkok State Railways years ago, i wonder what the drivers of these trains would think today if they travelled on the Skytrain zipping across Bangkok!

They would probably think today's skytrain is not all that much faster, they would be more impressed by the Eurostar.

Here is another old video I have found shot from way back in 1966 showing rice cultivation.

Not from the floods but great to see another of these historical videos.

Thanks for that. I hadn't realised Thailands steam trains were wood and not coal fired.
