More than 500 guests, including Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and former Minister of Foreign Affairs George Yeo attended the opening of the revamped Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, and the Zhong Shan Park on Saturday morning.

The two-storey villa which was revamped at the cost of $5.6 million, is located at Tai Gin Road, and had served as the headquarters for Dr Sun's revolutionary activities in South-east Asia. Visitors to the memorial hall will enjoy free entry for three weeks, starting from Sunday.

In his speech, Mr Teo, who is also the Home Affairs Minister, highlighted the special link the villa has with his family. It had been bought by his grand-uncle, who had offered it to Dr Sun as his home in Singapore.

'The memorial hall provides a link back to our cultural roots. It reminds us of the history of the Chinese diaspora in South-east Asia. Our forefathers had come in search of a better life and future for themselves and their descendants, even while they retained strong links to their land of origin...(the memorial) represents the spirit of sacrifice and service which they were prepared to devote to their cause,' said Mr Teo. Also present at the opening ceremony was the great-grandson of Dr Sun.
