Saying Goodbye to Another SG's Historical Landmark - Rochor Centre
The demolishment of Rochor Centre, an icon of 1970s SG, will mark the end of another era in the history of SG. Home to old bakeries (including a vegan bakery), Thai amulet shops, among others, Rochor Centre offers a fond reminiscence of the gradually disappearing small-time family businesses and SG's old-world charms. What a pity that it is to go too, to be sacrificed in the name of further economic and industrial advancement. And worse, the photo in the link below hardly does justice to Rochor Centre's simple, nostalgic beauty.

More about old-time Singapore. Bye-bye 1980s SG, hello 2012 and beyond. Just a bare 20-30 years and SG is hardly recognizable...

this must be difficult, and a defining feature of the Singaporean mindset - things need to be wiped out because space is running out. never thought about the crowded city-state "syndrome" in these terms. :-(

That's right. Actually a couple of years or so ago, SG's one and only archaeologist actually found strong evidence that there are important artefacts in one of the sites in the central area of SG, and wanted the government to postpone (but not cancel) building plans over the site as archaeological work done there will reveal very crucial information of our past which we have never known about. However, the government refused, citing that the postponement of the building plan will only incur economic loss for the country. One of the saddest thing to happen to our cultural heritage. We will forever never be able to know.

Thanks for contributing all these fabulous photos...This really bring back memories of yesterday...Too bad that it had to be torn down as such sightings are rarer in sg.

What will happen to the residents of Rochor Centre? It seems so often when people are displaced they have to go to smaller yet more expensive apartments.
