Saying Goodbye to Another SG's Historical Landmark - Rochor Centre
The demolishment of Rochor Centre, an icon of 1970s SG, will mark the end of another era in the history of SG. Home to old bakeries (including a vegan bakery), Thai amulet shops, among others, Rochor Centre offers a fond reminiscence of the gradually disappearing small-time family businesses and SG's old-world charms. What a pity that it is to go too, to be sacrificed in the name of further economic and industrial advancement. And worse, the photo in the link below hardly does justice to Rochor Centre's simple, nostalgic beauty.

If you don't sleep the midges will go for your eyes and pollen will fall on the cradle....Sleep, close your eyes...

More about old-time Singapore. Bye-bye 1980s SG, hello 2012 and beyond. Just a bare 20-30 years and SG is hardly recognizable...
I think this link is to be found only in YahooSingapore...

And this has to be the best blog I ever came across about Singapore Heritage. Yesterday.com.sg comes a close second (it used to be my favourite one). I found this new championing webbie from the Yahoo webpage above. Just love the one on the old bus ride:

While you are at it, check out the article on the Vietnamese Boat People in SG during the height of the Vietnam War (see the right-hand column of links). Enjoy.Last edited by yy; 17-11-11 at 01:34 PM.

this must be difficult, and a defining feature of the Singaporean mindset - things need to be wiped out because space is running out. never thought about the crowded city-state "syndrome" in these terms. :-(

That's right. Actually a couple of years or so ago, SG's one and only archaeologist actually found strong evidence that there are important artefacts in one of the sites in the central area of SG, and wanted the government to postpone (but not cancel) building plans over the site as archaeological work done there will reveal very crucial information of our past which we have never known about. However, the government refused, citing that the postponement of the building plan will only incur economic loss for the country. One of the saddest thing to happen to our cultural heritage. We will forever never be able to know.

*something is not working - clicked "delete post" twice but can't. N sorry that photos are rather jumbled up cos only 6 images can be downloaded at any one time, so the software randomly selected any 6 out of my 18 selected photos*Sleep, little one, close your eyes, mother will sing you a lullaby... Sleep in a jewel cradle, sleep, mother will rock you.

Thanks for contributing all these fabulous photos...This really bring back memories of yesterday...Too bad that it had to be torn down as such sightings are rarer in sg.

Re: Saying Goodbye to Another SG's Historical Landmark - Rochor Centre
What will happen to the residents of Rochor Centre? It seems so often when people are displaced they have to go to smaller yet more expensive apartments.
