Cannes prize festival

Mickael MOORE and his documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 about G.W. Bush won the Gold Palm in the Cannes Festival.

Do you think it was a good choice to promote N°1 an inquiry documentary in a Film festival ?

Do you think this prize put this international festival into a political debate? Or do you think now, Films have an other objective by promoting debate, creating opinion debate instead of distract people. (reality films)

What's your reaction about the fact it's difficult for Mr MOORE to find a distributor in USA?

In Roger Ebert's column in the 5/24/04 Chicago Sun-Times, Quentin Tarantino (directed Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Reservoir Dogs, + others), the leader of the Cannes jury, was quoted as saying that the jury selected F9/11 on artistic merits first and foremost. Politics was not the major reason it was selected Number 1 according to him. There were apparently only four US members on the jury (actress Kathleen Turner was another American member). If I am not mistaken, the sole French juror was a French actress (I'm fuzzy on this point).

The Thai film, Sud Pralat, I think was the title mentioned, was also up for the prize but Ebert said it got mixed reviews. Anyone know anything about this film?

Sud Pralad won Jury's prize according to the Nation. It was received attention because of its very personalized viewpoint and being non-commercial in nature.

I think it's good that a documentary won a prize. For me even a documentary can be entertainment. Judging from Moore's "Bowling for Columbine", I think he does a pretty good job of making documentaries entertaining while educational and making a political point.

What is Sud Pralad about?

I think I read that Fahrenheit 9/11 received a standing ovation for several minutes(&#33 after viewing at Cannes. Here in the States, Disney will not allow their distributor, Miramax, to distribute the film. They state that it is because of the film's political nature. Never mind the fact that Disney owns ABC, which owns radio stations throughout the country that broadcast rightwing political programming, most notably Rush Limbaugh. So much for the myth of the liberal media.

BTW, to clarify, I meant to say so much for the CLAIM of a liberal media. Existence of a liberal media in the US is a myth.

I went often in Cannes but never during the Cannes festival.

And just people from Medias can see the preview movies. The others can just shout and applaud at each side of the red carpet
