Bangkok's central railway station, Hua Lamphong, was on Monday jam-packed with workers each intent on returning to their home province to be with their family for the Songkran holidays.

State Railway of Thailand public relations chief Nuan-anong Wongchan said the SRT expected the number of Thai New Year travellers would peak on Thursday (April 12).

Mrs Nuan-anong said the SRT planned seven extra train services between Wednesday and Friday and 12 additional rail services from April 16 to 18.

At least 118,600 people were expected to use rail services each day during Songkran, she said

Mrs Nuan-anong said the SRT had increased the number of security personnel on trains and at railway stations, and ensured that all close circuit security cameras are functional.
