Billy and the Fat Boys go to Chiang Mai.....

One balmy night in Chiang Mai, with a few too many ales under our belts and a dodgy Panaeng Gai screaming to get out, Billy and the Fat boys made a bet....Come mid April 2015, the person who loses the most weight, using only healthy means, not surgery or skullduggery, would receive 5000baht from the other two, which will be donated to a Chiang Mai charity of the winners choosing.

We were so intent on sealing the deal we drove to Pai for the weigh in.....and lunch.

Pai is 130km from Chiang Mai and has about 170 corners to negotiate in that distance, Mike drove with myself and Billy as white knuckle passengers, spreading the weight on the left side of the hire car.

    Starting weights.....

And slim Billy, with an outside chance, starting at 80.9.....

We will update the progress of the competition, the highs and lows, the triumphs and setbacks, the tears, the joys, recipes and diet plans and also our travels around beautiful Chiang Mai.....and please, if you have any photos of places you have visited in Chiang Mai, feel free to post them.

Fileeep, I think it is significant that you're posting this thread from Chiangmai, where you and Mike, minus Billy, are visiting again. Are you, in a way conspiring against poor Billy, who, as the scales show, has very slim chances of winning?

PS- What is this rumor I am hearing that Billy has purchased a robe and round rimless glasses to complete the package, because if he tries to lose more weight now, he will resemble Ghandi?

Re: Billy and the Fat Boys go to Chiang Mai.....

It was during my trip to celebrate retirement and 65th birthday that it all started after a few day in Pattaya the "fat boys and Billy" went to Chiang Mai and when we men were doing what men do best.... That is drinking that the idea of losing weight was born on this night. It was consecrated by a toast "may the best man win" The reality is of course that I will win. LOL. I will be adding photos about some of my trips including a great day out yesterday with Filliip to the rain forest in Doi Inthanon.

No conspiracy happening here Marie, just good old fashioned hard work in order to win.....

As strange as that sounds, I can now see Billy as Mahatma Gandhi.....

Re: Billy and the Fat Boys go to Chiang Mai.....

The weigh in was in July and a lot of calories have gone under the bridge since then, we will have another weigh in soon and post.

In July I wanted to come to Chiang Mai to meet up with the newly formed Australian Ulysses motor cycle club branch of Thailand, based in Chiang Mai and that just happen to coincide with Billy and fat boy number one's visit.

Today I went for a ride with them. They have a ride every Friday starting at 9:30am, I contacted them before I arrived and organized where to hire a bike, the president, David Thomson met me at a bike shop on the Thursday and I signed the hire agreement. If you are into all things motorbikes and are an experienced rider, Chiang Mai is a great place to ride.

This is the bike shop and the bike I hired, a Kawasaki 650 Versys, normally 1800baht a day but going through the club, you get a 300 baht discount. This was an excellent bike to ride, it comes with the least amount of fuel in the tank, just enough to get you to a service station .

I picked the bike up at 8:30am on the Friday and rode it to the service station where we were to meet up, filling up the tank and checking oil and tire pressures.

7 bikes and 1 scooter rolled up.

Each Friday, one member takes the lead and plans the route, this time it was to be a resort on the road to Chiang Rai. We took off on the dot at 9:30am and hit the morning traffic of Chiang Mai city.

On the first right turn, we lost 4 riders, who went straight.... But never mind, we all agreed to meet up at coffee stop along the way.....

And then there were 4.....The first stop at the coffee terminal....about 30 to 40 minutes out of Chiang Mai on the road to Chiang Rai. Once out of the city traffic it was like a racetrack, the roads were fantastic, with long sweeping bends and not too many cars on the road and the ones that were, mostly kept left.....great!

We sat here and had a coffee and chat and the other riders didn't show, so we took off to the second arranged stop, which was about 90km out of town.

    The second stop....the White Cup.

As it turned out, the 4 other riders went straight to the White Cup Cafe and waited for us....how strange! But it all worked out in the end....the scooter rider didn't make it and turned back to Chiang Mai, two Farangs on a 150cc is not fun at all on the mountainous roads of Chiang Mai.

All back together (minus one) and ready to take to the road.....

Re: Billy and the Fat Boys go to Chiang Mai.....

Back on the road, we zoomed north on route 118......destination......the Charin Garden Resort, reason for this, was pie.....yes....Pie! Apparently, the pies baked at the Charin Garden Resort are worth riding 3/4 of the way to Chiang Rai for.

Check this out about eighty-nine-year-old Charin Singkarat.... http://www.afar.com/highlights/of-pies-and-land

This adventure would do my diet no end of harm.....but we never made it, as we continued on at break-neck speed, we soon realised we were heading towards huge black rain clouds and the lead rider soon pulled over to discuss this......nobody was keen to continue, so it was decided to turn around and have lunch somewhere else.

For the life of me I cannot pronounce this restaurants name, but it served delicious food and started with Noodle.....it is about 100m north of the White Cup Cafe (stop number two) on the opposite side of the road.

I followed these instructions to the letter....

After lunch, we sped back to Chiang Mai, it did rain for a bit but not too much and all met up in town at a place called Riders Corner, for a chat about the ride and few refreshing beverages. It was a very good day and a great ride, I was told, route 118 is not the best road around Chiang Mai and there are much better ones to explore. I am thinking, every time I return to Chiang Mai, I will make sure it is before a Friday so I can again go for a ride with the Ulysses Club of Thailand and experience more places.....if you are an experienced rider, I highly recommend hiring a motorbike and going for a ride with people with local knowledge, you will have a ball.

Re: Billy and the Fat Boys go to Chiang Mai.....

    Oh well,

It looks like the bet is on! But I feel the game is not straight as we say here in the UK, I am stuck here while Mike and fileeep are in the tropics of Thailand shedding weight! Here now I am starting to shiver with the oncoming signs of winter and taking comfort in some good hearty foods. Still nevertheless a good charity will be the recipient of some moneys at the end of it ...'our losing weight ordeal'...it is all good fun, although I fear a sneaky foot was placed on my scales during weigh in.....

    Susana,

Yes we are pretty tall guys and 'a couple of us are a little bit wider errrr than another' but time will tell.....

    Rijmond,

Thanks ever so much for thinking of us guys having movie stars looks, I am flattered as I am sure is fileeep and Mike. Are you a horror movie fan.....

It is all good fun and another excuse to meet up with great friends in Thailand again. If anyone wants to join us for weigh in in April next year please do and have Songkran with us in Chiang Mai.

    Billy.
