    Here is a recent photo of an immature Pacific Gull completing its final circle just before landing. You can usually get a crisp shot then.

    Without turning this into a photography nerds' thread, there are three things that go into an in flight shot that works:
    1, An SLR camera
    2, Point focus mode with your focus point on the bird's eye (seriously, its not as hard as you think) (actually all photos should be done on point focus instead of zone focus)
    3, A fast shutter speed (around 1/800 or 1/1000 of a second)

    A monopod may also help you to track your bird in smoothly, though I usually hand hold.

    Give it a try - very difficult but also lots of fun.
