Re: Thailand to upgrade from squat to sit-down toilets
With out Tourist Thailand this subject would not be happening they would still be squatting down everywhere, The Tourist buck has brought lots of positive changes to Thailand and i suggest that if you have not been to Pattaya in a few years you will be surprised of the progress there, same for phuket and many other Tourist hubs.
As for the Crap going to Pattaya or any Tourist place for that matter you need to look more into Thailands lack of help for the masses of poor people who's choice it is to go down this road rather than stay in Issan and other poor areas and suffer with little or nothing.
Be glad its not a choice people in the West need to take!
look at the whole picture because it starts more at this country's wealth spread than anything else and the Tourist buck has helped change so much of that for so many Thai family's'
So before slating all people who go down this route what would you do or suggest to help all these people who make this choice?
As its all about money. If your not Thai and put into this situation its impossible to be judgmental in my opinion what people believe they need to do to survive and provide for there loved ones.

Re: Thailand to upgrade from squat to sit-down toilets
well I may be mistaken but most of us are not despising the women who are forced into making these choices by trafficking, economic hardships, despair and lack of hope for the future, but we are definitely despising the affluent, filthy-minded, arrogant (and the list could go on forever) men who take advantage of them, exploit and humiliate them, including farang, Asian and locals clients and especially the criminals who profit the most from them.
I reserve my right to call Pattaya and Phuket filthy, crime-ridden, and to be avoided at all costs.

Human trafficking is much more prevalent than most of us realize.
www.humantrafficking.org 'A web resource for combating human trafficking' with a section on Thailand.

Re: Thailand to upgrade from squat to sit-down toilets
It's rather mind-boggling how the mentioning of products made by Thomas Crapper & Co causes people to discuss human trafficking.
Betti, if you want to make a list of filthy, crime-ridden, and to be avoided at all costs places you might as well include London and some other European cities. At least in Pattaya you have got the advantage that half the criminals are easily spotted due to them prefering being dressed in brownish colours.
I am not saying that there is no trafficking of humans in Pattaya; I guess it has its unfair share like everywhere else. But most Isaan people go to Pattaya and Bangkok because that's where the jobs are. All the Isaan people I have met in Chonburi either work in the tourist industry in Pattaya (hotels, restaurants, shops) or in factories in the surrounding areas. They are no different from people from the North of England going to London and the South East for work.
I think most people would prefer to live in their home region if they could earn a decent living there. If there were more jobs in Isaan people would stay there rather than going to Bangkok or Pattaya.

Re: Thailand to upgrade from squat to sit-down toilets
Tom, I don't see any disagreement between us. it's a shame that so many people can only make a living by serving sex tourists, criminals, and other shady characters - one way or another. but I have no illusions about the importance of this business for Thailand. otherwise something would probably have been done about it already.
