Re: David has been very ill and is now getting better
One day my sister brought in a pork fried rice from the local Thai Noodle Bar for me; it turbned out to be a day I was very sick with a virus going around the hospital and I could eat very little of it. I had been asking her for about three weeks to bring it in and the nurses and dietician finally convinced her she was allowed to...

What luck! To go to the hospital to get well and catch a virus. Glad you're better now. Maybe your sister will bring you another pork fried rice.

Re: David has been very ill and is now getting better
Thanks to everyone for their good wishes whilst I was ill over the last few weeks.
I was able to come home from hospital yesterday and am doing quite well. I won't go into full details here but just say that during my first two weeks in hospital I had two stays on the HDU ward.
Some people have mentioned 'fully recovered', the truth is I may never fully recover. The problems with my kidneys mean that I now have to return to hospital three times a week for the foreseeable future, possibly forever, to have a three hour session of haemodialysis. This is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, then those days I am very tired for the rest of the day.
For the time being I can not plan to return to Thailand, or really travel anywhere other than for a weekend.

HDU - I had never heard of this department in hosptitals before so if you are not familiar with it think Intensive Care and HDU (High Depencency Unit) is for people even worse. When you improve you get moved from HDU to Intensive Care...

Re: David has been very ill and is now getting better
Welcome Back David. Sorry to here about the news you will be on dialysis 3 days a week, it really makes travel difficult and expensive if you have to privately fund dialysis treatment on overseas trips.
Hopefully you will be eligible for a kidney transplant.

Re: David has been very ill and is now getting better
For travel within the European Union (plus Switzerland) my Medical Card covers this as dialysis in considered an emergeny treatment. So it looks like my travel will be confined to the EU. But you have to be on dialysis for 12 months before you local unit will recommend you for holiday dialysis.

(On the notice board in the unit there are adverts for holidays in Cyprus and France, amongst other places, where dialysis is available.)
