The board of the Government Lottery Office has agreed to allow live broadcasts of the lottery winning numbers on radio, television and the internet, GLO director Atthakrit Thareerat said on Wednesday.

The cabinet on Nov 21, 2006 passed a resolution to stop live broadcasts of the lottery draw on television, and to allow the broadcast to be made only on Radio Thailand.

Pol Maj-Gen Atthakrit said a working committee had been set up to study which television station should be used for the broadcast and how to do that through the internet.

The results of the study would be concluded before the end of this fiscal year in September. After that the people would be able to watch the live broadcast of the lottery draw three ways - radio, television and the internet.

"This is to let the people know the steps taken in drawing the winning numbers, for the sake of transparency, and to do away with the problem of people being misled into believing that certain winning numbers are fixed," Pol Maj-Gen Atthakrit said.

On the online lottery, the new GLO director said his office was still in the process of compiling academic points of view and studying the social behaviour of people in society.

He admitted that Thai people also like to buy the lotto operated in Malaysia and Laos, as well as the underground lottery in Thailand.
