I think ¡é͹ is more used for Items which have a Rectangular-Shape, like the Examples you gave: Charcoal, Butter ... or some more: a Piece of Soap ...

For Ice Cream Scoops I wouldn't use it, because their Shape is Round.

I still would go for ÅÙ¡ and that's what I mostly found when browsing the Net, also for Commercials, here is just one Example (3rd Line in the Picture):

You are right Tod, not all Things which use 楀 as a Classifier have "Legs", but the most common ones, and it's a good Mnemonic to minimize the possibilities when to use it or not

I think it's almost impossible to know all Classifiers and I doubt that even every Thai is so sure about it, but many Things have something in common and you can limit the possibilities of using which Classifier:

    Rectangular-Shaped-Items = many times ¡é͹ is used

Round-Shaped-Items= many times ÅÙ¡ is used

Items which have "Legs" = many times 楀 is used

    ..........

I once had a List with all those Shapes etc. and when to use which Classifier but can't find it at the moment.

But almost all other Classifiers have something in common with the Items they are used with.

Re: Numerical Classifier for Ice Cream Cones

Well, there is a Doi Chang coffee shop at my apartment gate which sells that "Walls" brand ice cream. You can get it in a sugar cone, a waffle cone or scoop by scoop in a bowl.

The classifier she used yesterday when I bought 3 scoops in a bowl was indeed ÅÙ¡ and NOT ¡é͹. ..

    I stand humbly corrected, . . .

When I was living in Thailand for the whole year in 2006 I had this Membership Card from Swensens and visited there regularly if not almost every day, I remember using ÅÙ¡ all the time when ordering, and I also remember gaining some weight in this year

In principle of Thai language, ⤹ is not a Thai word, it is from cone. And the cone is the edible thing to carry the ice cream. To be correct, I think anyone should say..May I have 2 scoops of ice cream in a cone please? Then this should translate to ¢ÍäÍÈ¡ÃÕÁÊͧÅÙ¡ãÊè⤹¤èÐ

FWIW: ⤹ is most definitely a Thai word. It falls under the category of ·ÑºÈѾ·ì.

The Thai language routinely "steals" words from English (and other languages) which have value, although the Thais call them "loan words" (as if they're ever gonna give 'em back). Because ⤹ originated from the English word "cone" doesn't make it "not a Thai word". It's just another one of the hundreds and hundreds of English "loan words" now used in Thai every single day.

I think 2 very well known "Loan Words" English borrowed from German are "Kindergarten" and "Sauerkraut"

    And maybe "Currywurst".
