Re: Women 'foolish' for returning B2m
I think most people would return it because they think at the end the Bank will find out anyway and we have to pay back something we already might have spent and make a big debt.
Probably out of being afraid of the Consequences and not because of doing "Good Deeds".
Agree with Susana, I doubt that many people could give back the Money or doing a "Good Deed" without telling anybody, that's probably harder than just keeping the Money. My interesting blog about Thailand at Thailand Blog ---> click here

Re: Women 'foolish' for returning B2m
The neighbours and bank official's response seems to reflect the increasing tendency of people to criticize and make trouble for good people who act contrary to the prevailing (negative) societal norms as they are seem as 'spoiling the market'.
Maybe not althogether related but it reminds me of those children who go against the norms to befriend a kid who was picked on in school and subsequently become ostracized as well.Last edited by yy; 02-08-12 at 12:43 PM. Reason: add last sentence

Probably other banks are no better-I have had a Thai bank teller run after me and stop me in the street after leaving a bank because she paid me too much on exchanging a travellers cheque!-but then again these other banks have not accused this honest lady (or me!) of damaging their credibility!

That's exactly my point! The ladies were in fact doing the bank a favor- never mind if they're doing it out of genuine honesty or fear of being eventually found out sooner or later. But instead this bank official chose to impute malice in their act! I'd think a more professional approach would be to thank them for returning the money and apologize for any inconvenience that the erroneous transaction must have caused them.

Re: Women 'foolish' for returning B2m
I'm not sure if there are some underlying cultural beliefs among some of the more 'high-so' Thai people or corporations which is responsible for this kind of deplorable, shocking behaviour (attempt to save face cos face is so important to some of the rich and successful Thais?). Some time ago, my Thai friend, another friend and myself were in a Thai restaurant in Australia. My (non-Thai) friend's food came smelling burnt (we all could smell and taste it). That friend politely notified the waitress of this and the dish was quietly brought back to the kitchen and that would have been the end of the matter when the replacement dish was delivered to our table. However, the OWNER of the restaurant was the one who came back to our table and with a very long, black face. Without an apology, she put the dish down and immediately told my friend that the previous dish was not burnt, that Thai fried rice all taste like that cos of the way it is cooked.

Hahaha, if you're right in your hunch, yy, that violates what is taught in restaurant management. Which is, if a customer complains within reasonable bounds of a substandard quality of the dish being served, the establishment simply replaces it without much ado. In more classy restaurants, they may even offer an additional free dish to appease the unhappy clients.
Oh, this face-saving obsession-it's starting to dismay me!
(PS- YY, I was modifying my post when you quoted it, that's why the difference between what you quoted and my final version.)
