Road Trip to Ayutthaya on 21 September 2012

Today I'm on a road trip to Ayutthaya. I'm starting to get emails from people asking if they should cancel their trip there due to floods. From what I have seen on the news so far is that only outlying areas of Ayutthaya flooded (like rice fields) & that the city & Bang Pa In are fine.

Internet permitting, I will be posting pictures live here on this thread & Twitter.

Road Trip to Ayutthaya on 21 September 2012

First stop is Wat Niwet Thammaprawat in Bang Pa In district of Ayutthaya. A temple that looks like a gothic church.

The only way to reach the temple is by this cable car:

The architecture at Wat Niwet Thammaprawat is a mixture of Thai & European:

Inside it is a normal Thai temple with a monk and Buddha image. But it has stained glass widows

Bangpa-in is one place I never tire visiting again and again. The view is just so refreshing! Apart from its beautiful landscape, what grabbed my interest about it is the historical account that a Thai queen drowned there because people couldn't save her as it was taboo to touch her! I am always reminded of that story when I am there.

The main floating market in Ayutthaya is open every day but it is more active at the weekend.

This is the bridge that collapsed the other week. Good to see that they used new wood to repair it:

At the old city hall there is an interesting exhibition about the history of Ayutthaya in English & Thai. It is free to enter.

You are so right Marie, have visited Bang-Pa-In 5 times or so, never getting tired of it and I am too always reminded of the tragic death.

Wat Panan Choeng was the only Ayutthaya temple to escape floods last year. Looks like they are not worried yet

Reclining Buddha at Wat Lokayasutha in Ayutthaya. During the floods last year, the Bangkok Post had a great picture of a boat here.
