Memorable Times In Thailand Part Three. One Year on and The Floods.

Last November i landed at Survanabhumi Airport, i must admit i thought my trip would be abandoned after watching carefully and reading about the devastating floods that where seemingly overwhelming most places. I imagined the floods to be like say an overflowing river drowning surrounding areas but i never realised it was such a volume of water that seemed to have a never ending rise and seepage from the ground. Things where all pretty normal leaving the airport but on my way into Bangkoks Sukhumvit area i noticed many roads to the side where sandbagged up and beyond the bags it was like a small river.

These photographs although not to good show how extreme the flooding was, they where taken from my flight to Chiang Mai just after take of. Land which would normally be dry was like massive lakes surrounding peoples homes, also industrial areas which i think is shown in one of the other pictures where swamped up to the rooftops! These scenes of flooding where visual almost up till the end of my flight, it was like looking upon an ocean with little houses or islands in it.

Here is a link to the Bangkok floods from 70 years ago, it is a re post i did a while back but if some new members or those who missed it last time would like to watch.

It is a year on now since the floods, let us hope that they will not be as bad as last time. Where i stay on the Sukhumvit Road places where well sandbagged up and concrete block walls had been built in places, both of these had been wrapped in a polythene sheet to further help keep out the waters.
