Whenever I make a stupid mistake in thai my friend will comment " mai ruu luang" I think it is not complimentary. Can it be interpreted to mean in very gross english," you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground"

It is not really that rude as you can say it jokingly. It means "you don't know/understand the story" or maybe more "you have no idea what is going on/what everyone is talking about".

If you are the only farang sitting at a table of Thai people talking in Thai. If you are silent and not taking part in the conversation, one of them might look at you and smile and say "mai roo luang". Or you can say it yourself when someone asks you for your comment and they will all then smile.
