I'm afraid it is already over run with tourists. When I was there a year ago I could see lots of tourists.
I could have noticed development of tourism infrastructure everywhere. Billy described Inle Lake or Bagan as peaceful places, with small amount of accommodation. 5 years later after Billy's trip, in Inle Lake, there were lots of new restaurants, small hotels, guesthouses, hostels and unfortunately ugly skeletons of future big hotels. Similar situation in Bagan. Most of these places are foreign investments, so sadly local people won't get much from that.
Also, the first KFC has opened its branch in Yangon in June 2015. Everything changes so fast.
Bagan will look like Angkor temples in Cambodia soon, or maybe it already looks like that... overcrowded with all tourist facilities you can think of.
In attached pictures I wanted to show you crowds in the most famous temples for watching sunset in Bagan (Pyathada Temple and Shwesandaw Paya). Lots of tourists arrived in big coaches with organized tours (picture of coaches was taken from Shwesandaw Paya).
Despite this fact I still love this place and I would definitely go again

That's bad news. Hope they manage the tourist trade better than Thailand often does.

When i visited first time wilma, there where no coaches i went like others did on a horse and cart, it was a little uncomfortable but great fun and after a full day going around everywhere Bagan was quiet and peacefull in the evening and night. Always there where power cuts which added to the atmosphere, it was here i nearly trod on a large black scorpion when i was returning home one evening by torchlight.

Small update. Myanmar bans tourists from climbing ancient temples in Bagan so climbing on pagodas for a panoramic view won't be able any more. I am glad I had a chance to admire sunset from pagoda's terrace.
