ปรัตยุบัน means ปัจจุบัน (The present time). You only see ปรัตยุบัน in the literature of poem.

Re: 1000 most common thai words used

Thanks, Suzie! Mystery solved! It does seem odd that a word that is only used in poems would be one of the most common. Hahaha...I'm feeling better about my score every day.

Re: 1000 most common thai words used

That's not a bad list for ต words.

Unfortunately, because the way Thai is written and the way it's spoken differ so markedly, a lot of those word lists are worthless as "tits on a bull". When ever I find lists which purport to be the "top 100, 1000, 10,000 words in Thai", I always wonder where they're getting their frequency from.

Most top word lists use programs to go thru tons of text in thai looking for the most repeated words. Sadly, for the Thais, most of the text available for data mining is written in a more formal way and hardly suitable as a "real source". There just isn't the volume of "real life spoken Thai" in print so the lists always come out skewed; because even semi-formal written Thai is far from how Thai is really spoken. The word ปรัตยุบัน is a perfect example. This would lead me to believe that the words were "mined" from sources which may be ไม่อินเทรนด์ (not "in trend") anymore

Chula Uni has a list of I think either the top 3000 or 5000 Thai words, and it too is littered with words NO one would say in common speech.

Conversely in English the amount of written material out there to 'data mine' from gives a far more realistic word list.

Still any list is a starting point, just don't believe for a second it's the final say on frequency of Thai words, especially as it's spoken.

I think it is because in English if you categorize a word as 'frequently used' chances are it can be used both in written and spoken form. Unlike in Thai where some words are specifically only commonly used in writing. In fact I think this is one reason why learners of Thai who are not properly supervised sound 'unnatural' or awkward. They have learned what a certain word means, but they're not aware that it is best used in writing.

That includes me, by the way.:-)

Good point. But we are doing this to learn to read and write so that is not totally valid.
But it gives me an idea. I have a few first 1000 words and first 3000 word books for learning Thai. I might have to go and have a check in them to see how the lists correlate. I will then make an updated list for ต and re-post.
What would be helpful is for some fluent speakers to tell us which of the words in the above list isn't used in speech or isn't used very often at all so that we could take them out.

I just had a look back through the list and can only find 3 words that I've never seen. That's not bad for a list of 60+ words.
    The words I haven't seen are: ตระกูล ตรา ตึก
The rest seem pretty frequent IMHO.
BTW I've only lived in Thailand for 6 years so I'm not an expert.
