Regardless of the circumstances, it is invariably difficult for a foriegner to get a fair hearing and justice in Thailand. If I were in his situation, I think that I too would just put an egg in my shoe and..."beat it".

    HI

This Brit understands Thai ness. If in wreck run from scene. If you have money no need to stick around and deal with the locals. Let your money and connections do the talking.

If he does have money and connections no problems, if not he is screwed

Leaving his passport behind means he can't run too far! He better hope he has enough money and/or clout.

    Hi

Remember last year, there was a foreign actress "Hi-so who spoke Thai" who ran into the back of a parked police car and killed the officer? She was supposedly racing another car on the freeway.
    What happened to her?

    Hi

I hope they checked his passport for a proper up to date visa.
that might be the only offence he will be charged with.

How does one "leave their passport" at such a scene anyway?

It is all a bit odd. Britons are more or less conditioned not to leave the scene of an accident-unless they are over the drink-drive limit or criminals! Odd he should leave everything-money, laptop, passport etc.
Can not find any reports on this accident in Thai English language press.
