Single vowels with long sound (สระเดี่ยว เสียงยาว)

Compound vowels with short sound (สระผสม เสียงสั้น)

Consonant-like vowels with short sound (สระเกิน เสียงสั้น)

In Thai, there are only 20 words that use the vowel sara ai-mai-muan. It represents the "ai" sound in the English word "by". Below are the 20 words and at the bottom are two poems that our students have to recite often in order to remember these words.

*ใส่ *sai to put *
*หลงใหล *long-lai to be crazy about *
*ให้ *hai to give *
*ให่ *yai big *
*ใหม่ *mai new *

The students at our school have to learn a poem in order to help them remember these words:

Primary 1:

ใฝ่ใจให้ทานนี้ นอกในมีแลใหม่ใส
ใครใคร่แลยองใย อันใดใช้อย่าใหลหลง
ใส่กลสะใภ้ใบ้ ทั้งต่ำใต้และให*่ยง
ใกล้ใบแลใช่จง ใช้ให้คงคำบังคับ

Primary 2:

ผู้ให*่หาผ้าใหม่ ให้สะใภ้ใช้คล้องคอ
ใฝ่ใจเอาใส่ห่อ มิหลงใหลใครขอดู
