Synonym A 'kam wai pot' is a word which has the same meaning as another word, e.g. 'duang dta-wan', 'duang ahtit', 'su-ri-ya', 'ra-pee' (all words for the sun).

คำไวพจน์ คือ คำที่มีความหมายเหมือนกัน อย่างเช่น ดวงตะวัน=ดวงอาทิตย์=สุริยา=ระพี

Homonym A 'kam porng' is a word which is written the same way as another word. If it's written the same way but can be pronounced in different ways it's called a 'kam porng roop'. e.g. สระ which can be pronounced like 'sa-ra' or 'sa'.

คำพ้อง คือ คำที่เขียนเหมือนกัน ถ้าคำนั้น เขียนเหมือนกันแต่ออกเสียงต่างกัน เรียกว่า คำพ้องรูป เช่น สระ ออกเสียงได้ 2 อย่างคือ สะ - หระ หรือ สะน้ำ

Homophone If a word sounds the same as another word but is written differently, it's called a 'kam porng siang'. e.g. สรรค์=สรรพ์=สัน=สรร (all spelt differently in Thai but all pronouced as 'san').

ถ้าคำนั้นออกเสียงเหมือนกัน แต่เขียนไม่เหมือนกัน เรียกว่า คำพ้องเสียง

Homograph But if a word is written the same as another word and also pronunced the same but the meaning is not the same, it's called a 'kam porng roop porng siang'. This is sometimes shortened to 'kam porng'.

แต่ถ้าคำนั้นมีเขียนเหมือนกัน และอ่านเหมือนกันทั้ง ๆ ที่ความหมายไม่เหมือนกันเราจะเรียกว่า คำพ้องรูปพ้องเสียง บางทีก็เรียกว่า คำพ้อง

e.g.
เขายืนอยู่บนเขาลูกนั้น - 'kao yeun yoo bon kao look nan'
He stood on top of that mountain ('kao' meaning both 'he' and 'mountain' but being spelt the same way for both meanings.)

ฉันเห็นพระฉันเพล - 'chan hen pra chan payn'
I saw the monk eat 'payn' ('chan' meaning both 'I' and 'eat', and 'payn' means the last meal the monks can eat between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.)
