    Thai food and sugar.

    Hi,

I am in Thailand again and probably had my two worst meals ever these past couple of days. Both where insanely sweet, one meal was Pad Krao Prawns the other Spaghetti Bolognese. Has any others encountered excess sweetness in there foods. I cannot understand why so much sugar is used in cooking these days, it seems to be more and more than ever before. Last trip i witnessed one young lady in Bangkok putting eight teaspoons of sugar into a small bowl of pork with noodles....'selec'. From now on any meal whatever i order it wil be a request for mai wan.

    Thanks,

    Billy.

Sugar use in Thailand has been of concern for some years now

    http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2010/0.../#.V73XM6JM6nM

At least 183 people die of diabetes in Thailand every DAY!.

Government seems to do very little about it

    Re: Thai food and sugar.

“Traditionally, our food is supposed to have a balance of sugar,” said Napaporn. “You’re supposed to taste sweetness balanced with spice, sourness, and other flavors. Now, cooks just go overboard with sugar. It’s like they don’t even care about the dangers.”

It's out of balance. I think one of the best things we can all do for ourselves is to avoid sugar, salt, grease and excessive carbs, from birth onward.

    Health is Wealth.

    Hi

Oh Yess way too much sugar is used in everything. You have to be pro active when ordering food.
they also use MSG a lot.

    Re: Thai food and sugar.

I can't remember how much food has been wasted in the past because my wife liberally sprinkled sugar over my meal when she did her own. I haven't used additional sugar for over 40 years and even find tomato ketchup too sweet.

I do, however, drink sugary fizzy drinks and was once addicted to Coca Cola.

I do the same, Billy! Though I have a sweet tooth, I don't like sugar in my noodles, meat, seafood, etc. It has become a standing joke with me and my Thai friends that when I want to eat something sweet, I will order dessert.

    Marie,

A sweet for me would be mango sticky rice, but i do think sugar in main meals has definatly increased over the years here. Tonight for me it will be an Indian vindaloo, i have a craving now. Hehee

    HI

It's not just the food but their snacks and drinks also.

when I first came I was eating way to much junk at 7/11 and drinking a couple bottles of green tea a day.
Went for health checkup for work permit and my blood pressure was sky high never in my life have I had high blood pressure.

stopped eating anything from 7/11 and starting making my own sun tea, unsweetened. In 1 month blood pressure back to normal for me.
