Re: A reminder to be careful of bag snatch thieves in Bangkok

I've thought a great deal about this danger, since I am quite vulnerable as I like to walk around Bangkok. I've seen videos showing some victims who resisted to release their bag, getting dragged and sustaining serious injuries. Which makes me wonder if it's instead better to loosen your hold of the bag once the thief tries to grab it, since chances are they are stronger than you?

I have also learned to put valuables NOT inside a bag but inside secret pockets in my garments. (Thanks to Billy for showing me photos of some clothes that suit this purpose. :-) )

Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear, or an idiot from any direction.

Using a bag with a long strap and wearing it across your body usually deters this type of thief, however, keep the bag part in front of you in crowds to deter pick pockets.

This is exactly how my friends wife was carrying her bag when they tried to snatch it, she was pulled to the concrete, sustained serious head injuries and passed away about a week later.

I am continuously telling my wife to walk facing the traffic, especially in the sois, where there is no footpath. You are less likely to be taken by surprise. Next time, she does the same again. Maybe I need to talk louder for her to get the message.
If it's not true, don't say it. If it's not yours, don't take it. If it's not right, don't do it.

I was told that the thieves usually drive past the intended victim first, to assess the situation. Then they turn back to be on the same lane as the victim's to execute the snatching. Gosh, you could end up being a paranoid being in constant look out for riding-in-tandem riders. LOL
