Without "fines" from illegal vendors, I just hope they don't create a new revenue stream, like stepping up litter enforcement with 2,000 baht fines for non-smoker's dropped cigarette butts!

Richard Barrow @RichardBarrow In the old days, all street food was sold by mobile vendors. In the future we will probably see more vendors like these ones #WalkingBKK

This woman pushes her khao gaeng cart throughout the neighborhood daily. The only time she stops is when a customer flags her.

Although Richards pics show carts, they seem like vendors that simply roll their cart to their spot and park. These are the people addressed in the crackdown.

Richard Barrow @RichardBarrow This is exactly why BMA cannot ban all #ThaiStreetFood in #Bangkok. These vendors are on private land & pay rent to 7-11

We have a local "steak" place that sets up, every night, in the display area of a motorcycle shop. Monday, through Saturday, they open at 18:30, after the shop closes and the bikes are taken inside. On Sundays, they open at 16:30, because the shop is closed.

We also have friends with a khao gaeng shop who were forced to relocate. They set up a new shop on space rented in a bamboo sales yard. Their business has actually grown, based on better location and a better looking setup.

There's a pretty good news story covering this topic by Jonathan Head from the BBC.

The article compares Thailand street food phenomenon to that of Singapore. I think it's more extensive in Thailand, such that it is not uncommon for some Thai homes to lack a kitchen (which greatly surprised me). That must be because many Thai families find it more practical and economical to patronize street food rather than cook their own meals at home.
