Insurance to be compulsory for travellers to Thailand

Insurance to be compulsory for travellers to Thailand

    5 Jun 2017 at 11:38

All foreign tourists will soon be required to have travel insurance before entering Thailand under a proposal put forward by a committee of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, according to an informed source.

The plan has been proposed by a committee working on the development of Thailand as a wellness tourism hub, and will be forwarded for consideration by the national tourism policy commission.

The requirement should not be seen as a "hurdle" to visitors to Thailand, the source said on Monday.

Under the proposal, the Office of the Insurance Commission would draft details on insurance policies and insurance distribution channels, including the installation of automatic vending machines at international airports and border checkpoints.

The Tourism and Sports Ministry first proposed requiring foreign visitors to have travel insurance last year, explaining it did not have enough staff to supervise the safety and welfare of the growing number of tourists.

Hospitals have until now often been left carrying the cost of medical treatment of tourists injured during their stay in Thailand and who have no means to pay their bills.

Who comes up with these ludicrous ideas?....... are there any other countries in the world where travel insurance is a condition of entry?....That fact alone should have given the proponents of this idea some clue. I particularly like the thought that this "should not be seen as a hurdle to entering Thailand". How else would young healthy backpackers see it? - they will just go to Laos or Cambodia or some other Asian country to spend their tourist dollars.

Just another addition to the revenue stream.

I hope they will accept insurance from the traveler's home country and not make it a mandatory purchase at the airport.

I don't think it should be an issue. Everyone should be encouraged to have such travel insurance before travel.

Problem is that a lot of people in the UK do not buy travel insurance, and then you see quite often newspaper articles concerning relatives trying to raise money for hospital bills and repatriation costs.

The key word in JWNY's post is "encouraged". I dont know of any other country in the world where travel insurance is an entry requirement. I doubt if this "proposal" will get off the ground - certainly if clear heads and a desire to encourage tourism have any sway.

Besides, you need to be insured already before reaching Thailand. So getting it only at Thailand airport is not practical.

Should buy insurance when you book flights, hotel etc as you get cancellation cover if illness, injury etc prevents you going-this ensures you get your payments back.
