Pirated goods will be wiped out from six locations in the country in the next month, Intellectual Property Department (IPD) director-general Thosapone Dansuputra has vowed.

The targeted locations are Maboonkrong (MBK) shopping centre, Pantip Plaza, Klong Thom, Ban Mor and Chatuchak weekend market. Outside Bangkok, crackdowns have been launched at the Rong Klua market in Sa Kaeo on the border with Cambodia.

That time of the years again. Time to roll out the camera crews.

It seems to me that the current regime is trying to stamp out most of the reasons that tourists visit Thailand for in the first place.

They are, as they have declared in the past, after a better class of tourists. The translation of that is people who have a lot of money to spend and do not need to buy counterfeit, or down market in anything, as there is more profit to be made.

Some years ago, I was talking to a hotel manager (Thai) during a very slow tourist season and asked him why room rates were so high - I had thought they would be discounting. He said that since there were fewer tourists, they had to charge more to keep up their income targets. I walked away scratching my head........ THAT is Thailand.
