Thailandís Tourist Police Vow Crackdown on Taxi Driversí Scams

BANGKOK Ė Thailandís Tourist Police acting deputy commissioner Pol Maj-General Surachet Hakpal on Wednesday vowed to step up its crackdown on taxi drivers who take advantage of foreign tourists.

Surachet said the Tourist Police has been instructed by the Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, to cooperate with the Land Transport Department on the issue.

Surachet said the prime minister wanted to get rid of unruly taxi drivers because their behavior damages the kingdomís image in the eyes of foreign tourists.

ďItís an urgent agenda item to get rid of taxi drivers breaking the law and taking advantage of tourists,Ē Surachet said.

Yes; checkpoints should do the trick!

They will also exacerbate the traffic jam that already exists ...

Simply enforcing the law to make drivers use their meters would be a great start.

It would work during the period of any clampdown and then drift back to "business as usual" as so many other clampdowns have. What is needed is 24/7 digital monitoring of each and every cab, measuring compliance with the law and with speed etc-which is probably out of the question.

Checkpoints will do nothing. Drivers will quickly know where they are and avoid them. Here is how to stop them:

Have a task force of plain clothes cops flag taxis in tourist areas. When the games begin, fine the driver and boot the taxi. Then, require the registered owner of taxi come to pay another fine and have the taxi released to them.

After a few trips downtown, to retrieve their property, those who rent taxis to drivers will straighten out their drivers. Owner operators will get a double hit in their wallets.

    Easy Peasy!

Between the bribes and the window dressing, nothing ever really gets done.
