Food prices at Don Meuang airport 30-50% higher than on streets

Food prices at Don Meuang airport 30-50% higher than on streets : Thai PBS survey
in Breaking News, General, Highlight | January 10, 2018 | By Thai PBS

Food at Don Meuang airport are about 30-50 percent higher than food sold outside the airport, according to a random survey of food prices conducted by Thai PBS reporters.

However, there is a food court or food centre next to the parking lot of Building No 1 that offers varieties of food at more affordable prices, although slightly higher than food outside the airport.

The problem is that this food court is wellknown and frequented by among airport officials and some tour guides who usually bring their Chinese tourists to eat there instead of eating at the other eateries elsewhere inside the airport.

On our last Siem Reap trip, at Don Muang, a 15 baht cone yai cost 18 baht.

At the Siem Reap Airport, a DQ cone yai would set one back about 90 baht!

Facing a barrage of criticism for overpriced food at Thailand's various airports, authorities have started to take action to curb exorbitant prices being charged by outlets.

Several food choices and beverages at Don Mueang airport were found to be overpriced following Deputy Transport Minister Pailin Chuchottaworn's inspection on Friday.

After Mr Pailin visited Don Mueang, he admitted there was some truth to the criticism of high prices but insisted there were options available to travellers.

    Hi

I fly out of DMK a lot. I have gotten into the habit of going early so I can have eggs benedict with salmon at coffee club. It is over priced but so yummy LOL 385 baht only have water which is also overpriced. The coffee is way over priced 150 baht for iced expresso can get at Black canyon for 70 baht a few meters away.

There are more reasonable priced food shops. But I choose to eat there only for the eggs benedict

I need to check the other coffee clubs not in an airport to see if they are charging the same price.

I usually pack my favorite to-go sandwiches and pastries purchased outside the airport and just buy beverages from eateries INSIDE the airport. I save a few $.

    Hi

I checked price at coffee club for same meal at their other locations and it is 310 baht. So the airport is about 19% higher. To be expected with a captive market.

Pailin probes airport food court publicity

Critics of high-priced airport food and beverages contend that the Magic Food Court at Suvarnbhumi is difficult to find.

Deputy Transport Minister Pailin Chuchottaworn will today visit Suvarnabhumi airport to inspect food and beverage prices at the airport's restaurants and stalls, following continued criticism that prices are too high.

The minister said the visit's main objective will be examining the amount of advertising and public relations the airport has provided regarding its food court, which sells food at comparatively cheaper prices.

Here's an idea, ... don't buy meals at the airport!
