Name = Ubonwan =อุบลวรรณ
Nickname = Dun =ตูณ this word may come from the word "cartoon", it is common Thai nickname such as cartoon.
hummm, she is the one who will provide the right meaning, I guess.

Thanks for that Sabai, it was the middle part of Ubonwan that was causing me the most problem, however I could decipher the last character and it is slightly different than you write, she uses ญ not ณ as you wrote so it's อุบลวรรญ.
As for Dun, her handwriting doesn't look to me like what you wrote, the closest characters I think they could be are ดล. Not being able to understand Thai script does ดล read anything like Dun?
Thanks again.

hummm.. David,
you have showned me something new about "อุบลวรรญ" with "ญ " it does not sound " ณ " when we use it. however sometimes a name can be more complex in spelling:for example; "cathy" and "Kathy", 'Shaun" and "sean".

Perhaps this is what's happening, David.
As your girlfiend writes "ดล" there is an inherent o sound between the ด (D) and the ล (L which has an "N" sound when it's the final letter in a word). So, indeed ดล could spell Dun or more correctly in American pronunciation Dohn which rhymes with "bone, cone, and tone."
I hope this helps.Abandon wrongdoing. It can be done.
Cultivate doing good. It can be done.

It might be Duan เดือน (shortened from ดวงเดือน meaning the moon).

อุบล was lotus in English
วรรญ ..I don't know
I know วรรณ means ผิวสวย (fair/beautiful skin) or something like that, but I've never seen วรรญ before. I asked my sister (from host family) to look it up in the official dictionary and she couldn't find it too. You should ask your girlfirend. (I wanna know too!
)
As for pronunciation, I agree with MrBradUSA that it should. I don't think ดล should be spelled as "Dun", though, but names are subjective so every kinds of spelling should be fine

Thanks for that Ha-Ha, but it is because of my girlfriends limited amount of English that I asked here in the first place, so we're stuck with what you tell me. :-)
As for ดล being spelled 'Dun' I would be more happy with the spelling 'Don' and that is how I initially spelled it. However whilst I am in Europe a lady in her local internet cafe translates emails for us and uses the spelling 'Dun'.
We have three translations of her surname, she tells me when I read the one done by the internet cafe it is wrong and of the other two it should be somewhere between them. :-)
