There is a type of Chinese desserts which have similar ingredients too. They are made of rice flour and have a flat, circular shape. They are dyed red and the fillings can be crushed peanuts with sugar or yellow bean paste.

I am not sure how it is called in Chinese "half shell green pea is same as splitted green pea (it is cooked faster). Sorry ! sometime I could not come up with the right words. The cakes Yeow decribed are my favorite ones and quite expensive too.

I have never seen black rice flour. We can get the dark rice here in Hawaii, although it is not that easy to find.

Black rice (Thai) is really hard to find. I suppose grinding up wild rice? That's the one thing -- finding the ingredients or good substitutions.

that looks yummy, thanks! I seen something similiar in a Thai cookbook without the bean paste. It's called kanom tom sam si (according to the book).

I have tried "grinding" doesn't work. The rice would have to be milled to achieve the right consentency of flour.

rcalaimo, you have to soak the rice over night then grind and mix with water then pour liquidy result in to the tight bag to allow only water come out not the flour leave it over night now you got yourself flour.

By the way I believe Khanom thian is Thai sweet not Chinese origin that why their is no chinese name for it and real Taiwanese or Chinese may not know any thing about it.

Khnom thian is adopted by Thai-Chinese because the name is associated with warship items. The word Khanom is meant sweet, thian meant candle which is basic of God warship insense and candle. (This is just my opinion)
