Try Nancy Chandler's map of Chiang Mai. Can obtain from web site http://www.nancychandler.net/ or you can find in any good book shop in Bangkok/Chiang Mai

I use the Thinknet digital map for BAngkok, which shows even the smallest soi and all public buildings. they also have an overall map for Thailand, but I don't know how much detail is available for the provinces and cities. maybe someone knows this map?

Re: map touring
Hi all,
I am travelling to CM in Feb/March 07 with my then new wife. ( Honeymoon ) We want to hire a car to travel around but unsure if I need a special license or if my Australian one will suffice. We are also interested in visiting an orphanage to brighten a few kids lives. Can anyone suggest a place like this near CM ?
Thank You

I'm not sure about driving licenses, they don't ask for one if you rent a motorcycle. but traffic is really crazy and unless you have experience driving in Asia, I would recommend you rather rent a car with a driver or a pickup truck taxi. it's under 1000 baht a day.
as for an orphanage, I can recommend this one:

No you don't need an international driving license, your Australian will do. Personally I don't have any trouble driving in Thailand although defensive driving is a must, especially in Bangkok where you need eyes in the back of your head and the patience of a saint when stuck in traffic.
Try http://hotelthailand.com/carrental/index.html if you decide to go ahead and rent a car.
