3 die in 20-storey elevator plunge
    Bangkok Post, 6th May 2006

Three Thai mechanics plummeted more than 20 stories to their deaths Saturday when an elevator malfunctioned while they were repairing it in a Bangkok high-rise office building malfunctioned.

A fourth mechanic lost both his arms in the accident and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The mechanics were apparently working on the elevator on the 23rd floor of the Citibank building on Sathorn Road, when it suddenly plunged to the basement.

The Thung Mahamek district police station is investigating.

A clear case of an Occupation Health and Safety issue, so many people have to suffer because of incompetence and lack of training.

So sad to read this story. Safety is so important in the trade industrys as our familaraity with our craft can lead to small inattentions with disasterous results.

If correct, it is as Paul says, lack of proper Health and Safety procedures.

Well maybe they deactivated the breaking mechanism, as that was one of the parts they were servicing or they needed to deactivate the breaks to move the lift up and down manually.
