Learning Lao - MP3 Downloads

Here is the first of the free mp3 downloads for people learning Lao. This is a male speaker. We will add a female speaker later.

Hello - sabaidee
Goodbye (first speaker) - la gawn bai gawn
Goodbye (second speaker in reply) - sok dee
See you later - pob gun mai
Thank you - kawp jai
Thank you very much - kawp jai lai lai
You're welcome - bor ben yung
Excuse me - kor tod
How are you? - sabaidee bor
I'm fine - sabaidee
and you? - jao der
What's your name? - jao seu yung
My name is (Joy) - koi seu joy
Where are you from? jao maa tae sai
I am from Vientenne - koi ma jaak wienjung

Obviously I am a beginner myself (started today!), but here are my notes. If you can already speak Lao then please add your own comments.

* The Thai "chok dee" for good luck is pronounced with an "S" when speaking Lao. The same for name. In Thai it is "cheu" but in Lao it is "seu".
* The Lao word for "I" is "koi" and is used by both male and female.
* The word "bor" is the negative and question tag. The tone seems to be the same for both "no" and yes/no?" unlike the Thai version "mai".
* To say you are not well, then say "bor sabai"
* For "you", say "jao".

As and when we get more recordings, we will be posting to our new website at www.LearningLao.com

Re: Learning Lao - MP3 Downloads

Actually all the 'Ch' sounds in Thai are spoken with the 'S' in Lao.

Here is an mp3 recording of numbers in Lao. They are nearly the same as Thai. The main difference is twenty which is "sao" instead of "yee-sib".

Re: Learning Lao - MP3 Downloads

Hello.
Is there any chance there will be more of these soon? Will be moving to Laos and want to grasp the language before I go. Am travelling at the moment so having more MP3s to listen to would be very beneficial. I surprised myself by already knowing all that is in these 2 MP3s
Kop jai lai lai!

Re: Learning Lao - MP3 Downloads

Lao for beginners (here if ordered from Thailand, here if from abroad) comes with tapes/CDs, which should be really helpful.
