Temple Fair in Samut Prakan 2009 งานเจดีย์ 2552

The longest running temple fair in Thailand is at Phra Samut Chedi in Samut Prakan. The fair is so big that it is spread over both sides of the Chao Phraya River. It is the main temple fair in our province and people come from all around the region. If you are in Thailand at this time then it is strongly recommended that you visit to experience a genuine temple fair. We will, of course, be bringing you daily updates as well as pictures and videos.

www.paknam.com/festivals/phra-samut-chedi-temple-fair.html

The dates for the fair are 9th-20th October 2009. There will be a parade on the first day. There will also be boat races and concerts. Full details and maps will be posted later.

Re: Temple Fair in Samut Prakan 2009

This is a map showing the parade route through Paknam. The red cloth is then taken by boat upriver to Phra Pradaeng for a mini parade there. It then returns in the afternoon to Phra Samut Chedi for a procession around the chedi. The red cloth is then wrapped around the chedi.

This map shows where the fair takes place. There are stalls down both sides of the road during the whole day. These are permanent for the temple fair. Then, at 5 p.m. the main two roads through town are closed and people set up temporary stalls along the middle of the road. This is when it takes one hour to walk 100 meters.

I wonder what's happened there? A very poor lineup this year.

Yes for sure. They used to have some big names. I guess they don't have much money available this year.

Re: Temple Fair in Samut Prakan 2009

Is it taking place 9-20 September or 9-20 October? There are conflicting posts on this thread. I was at that temple last Sunday and it was just a typical Sunday afternoon.

I think it's only fair to warn people planning to visit the area for the fair that Paknam will be unbearably crowded. Plan on allowing 15 minutes for every 100m you intend to walk on the streets on the Paknam side of the river and slightly less on the temple side.

Yes, sorry about that. Thanks for pointing out that mistake. It is indeed taking place in October as normal. Full details are being posted on our website at www.paknam.com and on this thread. I will be posting tips soon about where to go and what to see. We will also be posting pictures daily during the temple fair.

Re: Temple Fair in Samut Prakan 2009

This is final notice that the Temple Fair in Samut Prakan will be starting this Friday. You can read my previous articles, view pictures and a map here:

www.paknam.com/festivals/phra-samut-chedi-temple-fair.html

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Everything has been changed to an earlier time with the opening ceremony now at 7 a.m. Scroll down for full schedule for 2009.

According to the timestamp for my photos in 2007 and 2008:

* I took my first pictures of the parade shortly after 9 a.m.
* The red cloth was loaded on the boat at the city hall shortly after 10 a.m.
* It then headed up to Phra Pradaeng for a parade around that city.
* I took my first pictures of the parade in Phra Pradaeng at 11.25 a.m. which lasted about 30 minutes
* I then drove down to Phra Samut Chedi. As the Prime Minister was there last year I couldn't park near but I still beat the boat.
* My pictures of the boat coming back and arriving at Phra Samut Chedi were taken at 1.00 p.m.
* The parade around the temple started at 1.40 p.m. and finished half an hour later
* They finished wrapping the red cloth around the chedi at 2.40 p.m.

If you are planning on coming to the parade on Friday morning, best to arrive early because once the parade starts the traffic coming in from Bangkok will be pretty bad. The best place to stand is near the city hall opposite the Police Station and Provincial Courts. There is a fountain here in the middle of the road. This is where the one way system starts and so you will be able to see the parade twice as it returns on the other road.

Hi thanks for the info. May I find out from you on the following:

1) I just read on your blog that there's a 24hr bus service between BKK and Samut Prakan. How long is the waiting time between each service and how long will be the travelling duration? Any idea about the cost of the bus fare? If I alight in the vicinity of Wat Phra Keow, does the return bus let me get down at the same stop as I alighted?

2) Will I be in time to participate in the evening action if I set off from BKK at about 4pm? i.e. when does the event round off each night?

3) Besides the concerts, what are to be expected on the last 2 nights on 19/10 and 20/10?

4) Any advice on what will be good to bring along / offer as respect at the chedi?

Many thanks =)
