United Thais - Strong Thailand Project “ไทยสามัคคี ไทยเข้มแข็ง”

The government are encouraging the Thai people in all provinces to come out to sing the National Anthem at 6 pm every day until 5 Dec to promote unity and patriotism. The events are being broadcast live from each province, starting with Krabi.

The turn of Samut Prakan is on Friday 20th November 2009. We will be there to take pictures.

Thais unite by the national anthem

BANGKOK, 18 September 2009 (NNT)- Amidst the intense political crisis and the disunities of the country, the Government has launched a project to raise consciousness of Thai unity through the singing of the national anthem.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva chaired the United Thais, Strong Thailand or Thai Samakkhi Thai Khem Khaeng project at the Government House. He said that the project was the continuation of “I Love Thailand” project, explaining that all Thais should unite for the strength of the country.

The Prime Minister believed that by singing the national anthem together, it could help unite the people by raising consciousness that all belonged to the same country.

According to the United Thais, Strong Thailand project, major media would broadcast the singing of national anthem from each province each day starting from 20 September in Krabi. It would run in Thai alphabetical order, ending with Bangkok on 4 December. And on 5 December the entire country would sing altogether, in celebration of His Majesty the King’s birthday.

Most Thais are not sure national anthem singing will help creat unity

BANGKOK, 21 September 2009 (NNT) – Most Thai people are not certain that singing the national anthem together will create unity.

Suan Dusit Poll of the Rajabhat Suan Dusit Institution revealed the people’s opinion survey about the “United Thais, Strong Thailand” project.

The project started at 18.00 hrs on Friday, when Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the Cabinet sung the national anthem together at Government House. The national anthem singing activity would be organized in every province until December 4.

The poll found that most people were proud to be Thai and were born in Thailand when listening to the Thai national anthem.

However when asked whether the project would help create unity, 36.49% of them were not certain because the current situation was bad and people’s sentiment had changed from the past. 32.85% considered that it would help increase unity among Thai people, because the government was willing to create harmony and make people concerned about the country. Meanwhile 30.66% considered that it would help nothing, because Thai people listened to the national anthem since they were children, while their opinion had changed and a lot had no loyalty to the country.

Re: United Thais - Strong Thailand Project “ไทยสามัคคี ไทยเข้มแข็ง”

quite often I hear the national anthem broadcast at 6 p.m. at various public places - Carrefour, dentist's waiting room, market, pharmacy, shopping centre, that sort of places. most of the time nobody bothers at all to stand up or stop or be quiet. I was surprised to find this. last time in the dentist's waiting room, I was the only one to stand up (I am well trained, we hear it twice every morning at school, 7:45 and 8:15), while about 20 Thais remained seated. it was so embarrassing I sat down and wanted to disappear. next time I won't bother until I see some Thais standing up first.

If the current government really wanted to help unify the country they would hold elections and respect the people's choice.

All Thai people from Samut Prakan are invited to sing the national anthem together at the City Hall Plaza on Friday 20th November 2009 at 4 p.m.

I reckon it is going to be very crowded there on that day. The anthem, of course, won't be sung until 6 p.m. but sounds like people have to go there extra early.

No need to stand up when you're inside a building (with some exceptions like at the cinema). But it's not really necessary to sing or keep quiet anyway.

I didn't know there was an indoors / outdoors rule - but weird, I would think the national anthem is the national anthem anywhere?

Just a reminder that it is the turn of Samut Prakan tomorrow (Friday). They are expecting more than 20,000 people to turn up to sing the national anthem. It is live on every channel but NBT will have the full ten minutes starting at 5.50 p.m. They are asking people to go to the city hall plaza area from 4 p.m. onwards. We will be there too.
