Re: Food poisoning on increase in Thailand
five days after my last post in this thread, I had to be hospitalised for food poisoning for the second time in Thailand. I had been throwing up the water and antibiotics.
the culprit had to be in my own fridge because I hadn't eaten out on the day before.

Re: Food poisoning on increase in Thailand
I grew up in Thailand, had food from uncooked (not many and was when I couldn't tell the difference) to over cooked plus ate at the shops/stalls where personal hygiene was not recognised but I never got sick; I'm not saying that you won't get sick from it. Sooner or late, you will!
Back home here in Australia, I attended a food handling course, oh...my god!, I saw bacteria in the food, in the hair, finger nails, on hands that had been washed without soap etc... so gross and now I am quite paranoid about how people prepare their food. And sadly, I ended up having 5 chopping boards at home. *** I shouldn't have attended that course ***
P.S - You can get food poisoning in your own home.
When I go to Thailand I still eat out, mainly at food stalls and little shops. Love Thai food!!!!

Re: Food poisoning on increase in Thailand
People in the west eat food that is clinicly clean, protected wrapped, stored and cooked at certain temperature, not left in the sun, packaged in air tight containers, thrown out after 2 days, you name it. So we lose our resistance to the bugs that can be on food or in water even..
I dont think Thai's suffer all that much because they are used to eating unprotected food. My Thai family dries meat strips out in the sun, uncovered, left a dead chicken out side for some time, l thought they had'nt got around to disposing of it, no, we had it fore dinner, no one get sick.
PS Sorry to hear you had a bad run there tho Betti.

In my family any food that is beyond its "use by" date is usually given to me and I eat it without worry or problem.

Hi David and all,
We hardly eat out here so I cook a lot and I use Thai sauces. My husband asked me a long time ago about the expiry date; I said when the bottle is empty - he loved it and he ate the lot.
Cheers,
~Lime~

Thanks Mozzie,
I think there are two terms for use by date. One is ' Best before ' and ' Expires xxxx ' With Best Before, I don't think this harms you but the food may taste funny and even staled. The other other day my work colleague brought a box of expired chocolate to work and he was very smart he didn't eat it but left on our morning tea table - lol. I don't know if other co-worker ate it but I brought some home and now I've got half left; the colour has changed a little but it's yummy.
One time I used 10 years old sunscreen and it burnt my face... well I thought it burnt it because it stung my face. That sunscreen didn't belong to me, it's my husband's...don't know why he kept it for that long - lol.
Though, I am a little bit nervous with the expiration of medications. This stuff you need to be extra careful but my husband doesn't really take any notice of this.

Re: Food poisoning on increase in Thailand
l like the way you say things Lime,
l have had chocolate that had gone a white colour, tasted OK to me
The good ingredience in sun creams etc, might disapate over time, especially if people dont close the container properly. I realise your husband would'nt do that, yeah right.
Medications should be discarded, or not used after a reasonable time.
l once used tablet's that were well passed it's the use by date, at about that time l had dissy spells etc, the only thing my doctor could put it down to was, the out of date pills.
So now they go into the bin.

Unused medications should not be binned, they should be returned to a pharmacy for safe disposal.

"Use by" and "Best before" dates on items are a marketing ploy by companies to encourage you to buy more product.
